Women's Premier Handball League: Olympia and London GD battle to a draw

In the final match of last season, Olympia beat London GD by the closest of margins in a 21-20 victory. In the first game of the new season, the two teams came away with two points each as the game ended 20-20.

Last season’s league champions GD took a one-goal advantage into half time with the scores at a cagey 8-7. GD’s Nikola Szymura led the scoring with four first-half goals. She put another two past the goalkeeper in the second half to finish on six. Marija Stricevic top-scored for Olympia with seven goals as the match ended in a 20-20 stalemate.

It was a strong opening weekend for NEM Hawks, winning both their matches in the double-header against West London Eagles. In the women’s game, Hawks fielded a side containing a 16 and a 17 year old making their senior debuts.

They dominated from the throw-off, leading by 15 goals at half time. They maintained the pressure in the second half to win 40-13. Player of the Match Lydia Edgar was top scorer for Hawks, netting 12 times. Emily Maddison, Sophie Unsworth and Becky Barnes each scored five times.

Eagles’ response was led by top scorer Katarzyna Witkowska, who beat the goalkeeper five times. Zoe Lacour was Player of the Match for Eagles.

The final match of the weekend in the Women’s Premier Handball League pitted newly promoted Reading Lionesses, unbeaten last season, against London Angels.

Angels led 8-6 at half-time and stretched out the margin to 14 points at the final whistle, winning 28-14. Scoring for the Angels was led by Beata Farkas, Nikoletta Kurtiova and Reka Pusztai.

Academic pressures on students meant the match between Loughborough University and Peninsula has been postponed.

Having put 40 goals past Eagles in that 40-13 scoreline, Hawks top the women’s table with an impressive goal difference over London Angels in second. Olympia and London GD tie for third.
