Guildford Sabres face Reading Lions in the semi-finals of the Mens’ National Shield this weekend, looking to make a second successive final.

Sabres lost 29-18 to Coventry Sharks in last year’s final. They will be hoping to book their place in this year’s showpiece at Derby Arena on 11 May, and then go one better.

South East Regional A side Guildford know they face a tough test when they play Lions, who sit a tier above them in the National South League. The match throws off at The Edge Leisure Centre in Haselmere at 14.30 on Saturday.

Tim Lewis, GSHC President said: “We were obviously disappointed to lose out 29-18 last year, yet very proud to reach a national final in our first year as a club.

“We felt we didn’t show how well we had played across the season in the final. We beat some tough opponents on the way – Loughborough University in the semi-final being a close 33-31 win – and seem to really enjoy cup competition as a whole.

“Although we have lost a few players from last year’s squad, we have been fortunate enough to gain additions in key areas during the season, and, despite a slow start in the league, have improved a lot since just before Christmas.

“The Reading game will be physical and they have some very good players, but we hope to reach our second final in two years which would be excellent for all involved in the club.

“The spirit in the camp is high and the men are working very hard in training. We are really looking forward to 16 March and hope to be involved on finals day.”

Early-bird tickets are on sale for the final at Derby Arena on 11 May at this link.
