Olympia and GD look ahead to top-of-the table clashes

Olympia and London GD have given their thoughts on their Capital City derby double header as the mens’ and womens’ teams of the top two in the Premier Handball League go head-to-head.

GD head the mens’ and womens’ league after seven rounds. Olympia are in second in both leagues, one point behind. North-west side Warrington Wolves – who are not in action this weekend - have the same number of points as Olympia in the mens’ league, but the London side has a better goal difference.

A win or draw would keep GD – who won the mens’ and womens’ titles and National Cups last season - top in both leagues. However, a win for Olympia would see them move into first spot.

In the womens’ competition, both teams are undefeated so far. GD have won every game since an opening day draw. Olympia have drawn two matches in the league this season, the most recent coming against Hawks in round four.

In the men’s league, GD are on a five-match winning streak since a draw in round two, and an opening day defeat to Olympia.

Looking ahead to the match Olympia said: “Olympia are really looking forward to the games this weekend. The rivalry we share with London GD is the biggest in the UK. Every single member of this club, from the Premier Handball League squads all the way down to the Juniors, understand just how important these games are.

“The fact that both games are taking place on the same day and in the same hall will be a massive, as there’s always been a really strong familial bond within the club, and our members support each other through everything. They’re like the ‘8th’ player on the court’ when they’re on the side-lines.

“No matter what happens on Saturday, the result will play a massive part in the Premier Handball League title race.”

London GD said: "Playing Olympia is always a special weekend. Usually both teams play on the same day which generates even more expectation with more supporters than usual.

“Olympia is always one of the teams to beat. In the last couple of years we really struggled to get points against them. They have a very physical and quick team which never gives up.

“This season the league is very tight with most of the teams at the top of the table able to beat each other, which makes it more interesting overall"

Both matches are at Barking Sporthouse. The women throw-off at 13.30 on Saturday, with the men to follow at 15.30. Admission for spectators is free.
