Men's National Cup: Giant-killers Titans defeat Seahawks

Carshalton Titans upset the form guide in the England Handball men’s National Cup with their victory over top-tier opposition. Titans, who play in the National League South, secured a 19-27 win over Brighton Seahawks, who play in the Premier Handball League.

It was 6-10 at half-time to the Titans. Sam Crocker netted six times for Seahawks, and Regis Dore scored eleven for Titans. This is Titans’ debut in the National Cup and this victory followed a 40-9 win over Bristol Spartans in the previous round. The Surrey-based club are making waves as they go forward to the quarter-finals.

Defending champions London GD were victorious 25-31 over Poole Phoenix. The south coast side were 9-14 down at half-time despite four first-half goals from Michael Davies. GD did enough to win, with eight goals from both Patrick Guenther and Dan Terracina.

West London Eagles triumphed 27-24 against University of Loughborough. At half-time it was 10-13 to the Londoners who maintained that three-goal advantage to the end. Eagles’ greater experience sealed the victory as the students pushed them hard throughout. Jojo Ernst was the man of the match on the right wing with 10 goals for Eagles.

Premier Handball League Olympia beat National League North side Liverpool 27-19. Liverpool were 7-13 down at half-time despite the best efforts of top scorer Nuno Carvalho, who netted an impressive ten times. Carlos Navarro replied with six goals for the London team.

Cambridge defeated Chelsea 33-27 in what was the highest scoring game from this round in the men’s National Cup. At half-time Cambridge were just one goal in front, but after a strong second-half from Alejandro Garcia Costa with five goals, adding to his three in the first half, they ran out winners by six. Top scorer for the London team was Maris Jansons-buls with ten.

Nottingham defeated Islington 35-21. The East Midlanders turned around ten goals in front and extended that lead to 14 by the final whistle. Francisco Pereira scored nine for Nottingham, and Igor Florescu and Felix Doerr netted seven times each for the London team.

Warrington Wolves beat Oxford University in what was a re-run of the 2018 cup quarter-final. On that occasion Wolves were victorious and they repeated their feat here, winning 25-22 against the students. Wolves were four goals ahead at half-time, which the students drew back to three at full-time. Ryan Thomas and Chris McDermott each netted six times for Wolves. Frederick Poulsen replied with six for Oxford.

NEM Hawks came through 33-28 against Coventry Sharks with seven goals from Harry Morley and six from Ryan Goodwin.

The draw for the quarter-finals, which take place on 19/20 January 2019, will be made at 19.30 on 12 December 2018.
